Parking on Kangan Drive is stressful!

Throughout the past few years there has been a tremendous increase in the number of drivers contacting Casey to express their frustrations about the parking on Kangan Drive. The concerns have mainly been about drivers not following on-street parking restrictions, which contributes to traffic congestion during peak times. This is very concerning as it impacts community access to essential services.

Our Parking Compliance Officers have been responding to these issues and have been patrolling the street regularly, but we have found that this is not enough to relieve the current parking stress or change the illegal parking behaviour.

A new way of managing parking...

The Digital Parking Management Trial will test new camera-based parking detection technology. It will operate six cameras within the west section of the Kangan Drive precinct to monitor vehicles parked within the parking zones on both sides of the street.

The technology will:

  • Monitor for illegal parking activity,
  • Monitor for parking availability, and
  • Include live mapping ability to help improve drivers’ capacity to locate available parking bays on the street quickly and easily.

Our data will paint the picture

The trial will also collect information about parking in the form of data that includes how drivers use the different parking zones. The information collected contains:

  • how long a vehicle occupies a parking bay,
  • arrival times,
  • departure times,
  • peak times, and
  • parking turnover.

The data gathered will help us to understand if the current parking is suitable and will help to make improvements and adjustments so that it becomes more accessible to everyone.

Disclaimer regarding recording and personal details

  • All recorded footage collected throughout the trial will be securely stored in line with Council Policies.
  • Personal details are not collected.
  • Footage is focussed on vehicles and not on pedestrians.

How this trial will benefit you

The goal of the trial is to find out if the camera parking technology will improve the way we manage parking. Our greatest aim is to reduce your parking stress and ease congestion.

Future opportunities

If the trial is successful, we will implement the parking technology permanently on Kangan Drive. We also may have an opportunity to expand the technology to other areas throughout Casey to address similar challenges.
