Why is Council designing a new digital service for registering pets?

Providing an online option for registering your pet will mean that you can register your pet from home at any time that is convenient for you. This is part of Council’s ‘Digital Strategy’ - to provide more services through digital channels. We hope that by having the opportunity to register a new pet online will encourage more of the community to be responsible pet owners, and will give greater support for people to comply with the Domestic Animals Act 1994 (that all cats and dogs over 3 months of age must be registered with a local Council).

Why do you need the community’s help for participation and research?

In order to make this new digital service as convenient and user-friendly as possible for pet owners, we need to talk to pet owners! But just talking is not enough - we need to see you interacting with the current service, have you try out our new designs and ideas, and understand your experience with the new process. This way, we can make sure that we find out all of the frustrating parts and can then make a design that really meets your needs.

What will be involved if I choose to participate in person?

Depending on which stage of design process we are up to, we might have a sketch, an online design, or an interactive form that we need your feedback on. We will ask you to interact with the design while thinking out loud so that we can see if the design incorporates everything that you need to achieve your goal (in this case, registering your pet). By participating, we will give you a free coffee voucher in appreciation for your time and effort, and you will also go into the draw to win a $100 pet store voucher.

What will be involved if I choose to participate online?

We will send you a link to an online design and capture your screen while you are interacting with our design. This will mean that we will be able to see how you interact with our design, such as where you move your mouse, which parts you click on, and if you can achieve the goal (of registering your pet).

By participating in this research, will you help me to register my pet right now?

If you are in a hurry to register your pet, then participating in our research may not be the best option for you. Until our new online process has been launched (in late September), to successfully register your pet, you will still need to use the current process with the paper form. The aim of our research is to have participants look at our ideas during the designing phase so that we can figure out the best designs to use in the final process. Once we are ready to launch the final process, we will need some willing participants to be the first to test it out before it is widely advertised. You will then be able to register your pet using the digital service.
