Naming a new wetland reserve in Cranbourne West – Stella Taylor Wetlands
We are seeking community feedback on a proposal to name the new wetland reserve at Affinity Lane, Cranbourne West, ‘Stella Taylor Wetlands’.
This proposal has been submitted by the Natural Reserves Conservation League (NRCL), formerly known as the Save the Forest Campaign. The organisation has a long-standing connection to the site, which was previously owned and operated by NRCL as a plant nursery until the land was subdivided and transferred to the City of Casey in 2025.
The proposed name recognises Stella Taylor and reflects an opportunity to acknowledge contributions to environmental conservation, while also supporting gender equity in place naming.
Naming the reserve ‘Stella Taylor Wetlands’ also strengthens the site’s connection to its environmental history and ongoing role as an important natural and community space within the Cranbourne West area.
Stella Elaine Cross was born circa 1900 at Heywood Victoria. At the age of 25 she married Reginald Taylor and moved to Adelaide where she lived for several years before returning to Victoria. For many years, Stella and her husband, Reg, owned a ‘weekend shack’ abutting Western Port Bay in Tooradin.
Stella Taylor gave 16 years of service to the Save The Forests Campaign Council and the Natural Resources Conservation League between 1947 and 1963. The first record of Stella’s attendance at a Save The Forests Campaign Council meeting was September 1947 representing the Country Women’s Association of Victoria (CWA) as the Handcrafts and Home Industries Committee Chairman. At the next meeting in February 1948, she was elected to the Executive Committee, and at the following meeting in September 1948 she became the first female President of the organisation. A position she held for two years. In February 1950, Stella retired as President but continued as a member of the Executive Committee, where she remained the CWA representative.
This proposal has the approval of Stella Taylor’s family.
