Why are we talking about this?
Access to safe, adequate, affordable housing fulfills the basic human need for shelter. It is essential for health, well-being and economic security.
High housing costs relative to incomes can result in rental or mortgage stress and homelessness.
In the City of Casey, it is estimated that:
- over 1 in 3 households earn very low or low incomes,
- 1 in 5 Casey households paying a mortgage experience mortgage stress,
- over 1 in 3 renting households experience rental stress,
- people counted as homeless increased 37 per cent between 2011 and 2016, a total of 1,280 people.
