Casey’s Urban Growth Boundary (UGB) has been moved four times over the last 10 years, due to the pressure of urban development. As a result of diminished agricultural land, there has been increased negative impacts on the ecology and hydrology of the land area, that is a vital part of Melbourne’s food bowl.

The adopted Casey's Southern Urban Rural Interface Design Guide provides high level design guidance for future developments along the southern urban growth boundary of Casey. The Western Port Green Wedge has an internationally recognised environment, fertile soils, established equestrian and agriculture and horticulture industries. The interface would limit development within the UGB, act as a buffer for agricultural uses, protect natural habitat, and offer passive recreational and storm-water management opportunities.

The project aims to:

  • create a sustainable urban-rural interface by transforming the UGB from an abrupt edge to a dynamic place that celebrates the meeting of the urban and the rural settings,
  • promote a thriving place with abundant landscape, habitat corridors and drainage waterways with a strong sense of recreational amenity for the community.

Consultation concluded 10 July 2020.
