Testing, trialling and experimenting with new technology will support economic, social and environmental growth. Our curiosity and optimism about technology and innovation will spark growth across Casey. Council will develop a Smart Casey ecosystem to lead new conversations with a range of partners that lead to smart outcomes.

Objectives:

Smart City Ecosystem
To build innovation capacity, collaboration and action that enhances Casey liveability

Education
To become a destination for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths (STEAM) education, high-tech industries and entrepreneurs

New Jobs & Growth
To attract existing and emerging industries to Casey

Smart City Case Study:

LoRa WAN

The rollout of the Casey wireless communications network, LoRa WAN is complete. This network supports the community and business to adopt and take advantage of modern technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT).

It uses a technology called LoRaWAN – Low Power Wide Area Network.

The network connects devices across more than 80% of the municipality.

Smart devices to control systems

The LoRaWAN technology supports IoT devices to send and receive data for free and allows users to control different systems from remote locations. For example, Casey residents can use a smart device to turn lighting or sprinkler systems on and off remotely.

The network will also benefit operational Council efficiencies. For example, sensors on the LoRa WAN will be able to send diagnostic information from connected equipment. This will enable higher levels of service availability of council assets.

LoRa WAN and IoT in Action: Casey Tech School

As part of Casey Tech School's Enterprise Program, City of Casey provides a real world challenge and the students can create solutions.

The challenge is, 'how can the City of Casey's long range (LoRa) wireless network be hacked to improve the sustainability and functionality of Casey infrastructure?

Over the three-day Enterprise Program, students explore the opportunity, brainstorm solutions, learn STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) and design-thinking skills to develop a prototype, and pitch their concept in an exhibition. By providing students with this real-world challenge, the City of Casey is supporting students to connect STEAM with local industries and career pathways, preparing them for the jobs of the future.
