Project Overview
Future Mobility Casey is a Smart City and Innovation initiative that aims to make transportation in the City of Casey more inclusive, safe, smart, and sustainable. As our community grows, there are challenges we need to consider, as well as exciting opportunities to improve mobility for the future of our city.
As part of Future Mobility Casey, we'll work with universities, innovative start-ups, businesses, and social enterprises in the upcoming months. Together, we'll drive research and test solutions to solve our current and future mobility challenges.
As part of this work, we will deploy sensors at Narre Warren South P—12 School to inform research on road safety around schools. These sensors, strategically placed on Ormond Rd and the corner of Ormond Rd and Amberley Park Drive, will observe pedestrian and vehicle movements in the area. This data will be crucial in shaping future traffic management and facility accessibility, ensuring a safer and more efficient environment for all.
What Type of Sensors Will Be Installed
The sensors installed at Narre Warren South P - 12 School are 4K object detection sensors powered by AI vision technology. An optical device (i.e. a camera) feeds picture data into an onboard processor, which will detect vehicles and pedestrians and track them through the shot. Because all processing is completed within the unit, no image or video data is gathered, saved, or distributed for processing at another location. This equipment setup protects the privacy and anonymity of members of the public who contribute to the data set, ensuring no individual contributor can be identified.
What Information Will the Sensors Collect
The sensors will collect anonymised data on pedestrian and vehicle activities. In particular, the sensors will detect
- People crossing at locations that are not staffed (jaywalking)
- Approximate vehicle speed
- Count of vehicles
- Count of pedestrians using school crossings
- Pathing of vehicles through the roundabout at the corner of Ormond Rd and Amberly Park Drive
- Detection of "near miss" events around pedestrians and vehicles
Council's anonymised data collection strategy ensures privacy while empowering data-driven site management and development decision-making. For more information on anonymous data collection, please see our Ethics and Privacy Statement.
Parking Enforcement trials at Narre Warren South P - 12
Another aspect of Future Mobility Casey will involve data collection from new technology being trialled by our Parking Enforcement team. The technology involves using AI vision to gather evidence on parking infringements. Casey's Parking Enforcement team will conduct several trials around the Narre Warren South P - 12 precinct between 16/04/24 and 30/05/24.
The team will not issue infringements based solely on data gathered by the new system. These trials primarily aim to test the calibration and accuracy of the new equipment and evaluate its functionality and suitability for use in Casey. The Parking Enforcement Officers reserve the right to exercise their judgment in issuing infringements based on existing parking fine issuing processes and methodologies at their discretion.
The data collected by these trials will also feed into our research on school safety.
